How to make a Speech Interesting

Gv Manan Sharma

Many of us,(audience or speaker)think that the audience wasn’t exactly interested in the speech and that the speech could involve the audience in a better way. Did you ever think that your speech seemed boring? Well, no worries now because here are three tips that will help you grab the attention of your audience and give you the results you expect from your speech.

Tip 1: A Compelling Introduction. A good introduction is necessary because that’s the part of your speech the audience will focus upon the most. There are many ways to craft an engaging introduction:

  • Asking the Audience to Imagine: The audience doesn’t want to sit idle and listen to your speech. They want to do something. And you can’t conduct an activity either. So we ask the audience to imagine.

  • Enact a Scene: This is one of my personal favorites. The audience may not completely understand everything you say. But the actions you do will explain enough to the audience to make sense out of what you are saying. E.g. In one of my speeches, I enacted a small fighting scene between a Jedi and Kylo Ren (Characters from Star Wars). And I am convinced that my audience understood what was happening.

  • Questions: The audience will immediately listen to a question even if they are not paying attention to your speech because they want to show that they know the answer to your question.

Tip 2: A Marvelous Body. The body is the largest part of a speech. The audience will not remember most of it but it should still be interesting as everyone will listen and understand the speech at that point of time:

  • Facts: If the body of your speech has facts then the audience will be very interested in your speech. A small recommendation on this is, try to make your facts small so that the audience can remember them with ease.

  • Using Placards: Placards are very helpful while conveying a message that includes images, graphs and collectively visual aids. You can make placards by drawing, printing or just writing a slogan. It is attractive to the audience and easy to handle.

Tip 3: A fancy conclusion. Conclusions like Introductions make a great impact on your speech and are remembered by the audience. Some good ways to end your speech are:

  • Quotes, Thoughts or Saying: According to me this is the best way to end a speech. You can always find the perfect quote without much struggle. These quotes make an enormous impact at the end of your speech and, you have to add a ‘Thank you’ at the end.

Asking a last question: Although this option is less preferable, it interests the audience. The audience will be eager to know the answer and may give you the vote if their answer is correct. Try not to make the question too hard.
