HUMOUR – A KEY TO ACHIEVING SUCCESS IN SPEAKING

Gv Ahana Ghosh

Are you having a hard time coming up with the right-humour speech topic?

One that isn’t boring or cliche? Are you looking for a speech topic that will

both interest you and captivate your audience? Do you want to make your

audience laugh like they have never before? It’s easier said than done,

right?

Creation and delivery of a speech is a burdensome challenge. It may be

nerve-wracking to build a speech that may live up to your audience’s

expectations. But don’t worry! Worries will make your problems worse; rub

those worries with a smile :)

HOW IS HUMOUR A SECRET WEAPON TO YOUR SPEECH?

Humour does more than just to make people laugh. It allows you to connect

with your audience, make them compelling to your audience’s thoughts.

Humour is the best way to make your message stand out; and yet people

hesitate to show their true potentials!

Let me make it easier: Imagine a plain white frosted cake, you might be

saying, “This I have seen a gazillion of times!” Nothing special right? Now

add some chocolate drizzle around the edges followed by an ice cream

stick on top. (P.S – You may add your own addons in the cake too, well it’s

all yours!)

That appealing face of cake, just makes your mouth water, right? Adding

ice cream on the top and BOOM! A delicious heaven dessert!

Adding a bit of sprinkles to your speech is sure to make the audience gain

attention towards your speech! It is not always essential to having a show

stopping cake to impress your customer… maybe a simple cake can do the

trick :)

TIPS ON HOW TO DELIEVER A HUMOROUS SPEECH

Humour is a lethal weapon (Like a cake); the temptation to resist laughing

is like the temptation of you not eating the favourite item you like the most.

However, it is equally important to master the art of humour, making people

laugh is not an easy task!

Once you master it, the sound of victory will be heard when you see your

audience laughing like you expected them to, if not do not leave the

attempt and try again some time later!

1: TALK IN A CASUSAL MANNER

Try to have a casual approach when you speak to your audience, do not

indulge in using words that are difficult to pronounce by you and making it

harder for your audience to connect with you. Instead of having a tough

time engulfing a thesaurus you just made in your speech, try to make the

simple as possible. Be comfortable with your speech, make the audience

comfortable too. Best of both worlds, right?

2: CHOOSE A TOPIC THAT YOU LIKE TO SPEAK UPON

Most speakers like to narrate a story that they experienced, touch it up a bit

and voila! A great humour speech for the ages. If a person has heard a lot

of speeches and if you would like them to remember one, they will mostly

pick out a humour speech or a line they remember from that speech that

engaged them through the show. However, it is not always necessary that

it has to be your story that you have experienced, if you have ever felt your

relative’s speech more humours, pick it out. I am sure your relatives would

have been happy to spread their story to the audience!

3: MAKE JOKES ON YOURSELF, NOT ON OTHERS

The most likely mistake speakers tend to do is to make jokes on others,

while it may seem fun to you it might not be for others. While you make fun

of yourself, you interact with the audience more and aid them to relate the

story to their own! So, make sure not to hurt others sentiments while you

speak. Spread the laugh not the gossip!

4: MAKE YOURSELF RELATABLE TO OTHERS

Choose the correct humour for the age group you speak for. If you don’t do

profound research on this you might as well get stuck up with your speech.

You will experience no laughter even when you add some mini jokes on.

You will instead think that the crowd you might be speaking for was a

‘tough crowd’, while the case is the opposite.

THINGS YOU COULD DO BEFORE YOU GIVE A HUMOUROUS

SPEECH

1) TRY TO HAVE AN AMIABLE ENVIRONMENT

If you won’t feel the emotions neither will your audience. Attempting

to create a link with the audience is simple: FEEL WHAT YOU WANT

TO CONVEY. If you feel it, your eyes will show it. The best way to

achieve, is to place yourself in the position while you speak.

2) PRACTICE, PRACTICE AND PRACTICE!

It takes a lot of experience and time to conquer this art, there might

be some mishaps during the way, but never be disheartened! Try

again next time, with improvement and you will much better! Once

you are accustomed, you would now add a new hobby in your

skillset: Sense of Humour. “Humour does not go unnoticed!”

3) RELAX YOURSELF BEFORE THE SPEECH

Is it your first time giving a humorous speech? Do you feel that the

lines you set up aren’t that good enough to make the audience

laugh? Pacify yourself by taking a deep breath knowing that you are

putting your best foot forward. It is a common tendency speakers go

through, and its fine if you experience it too. If your speech didn’t end well as you expected, the audience would love to guide you through some pointers for your future attempts.

When you become a déjà vu at making others laugh, you will soon be able

to achieve success in your future speeches. You will soon experience that

you enjoy yourself too! Humour is easy as well as tough to achieve, but

‘Laughter is the best medicine!’ Smile always and stay happy :)
